The Creole Trail and on to Texas

Friday we were back on the trail - and not just any trail -

the Creole Nature Trail!

We left Abbeville pretty early to get a good start on the Louisiana Outback. We continued west on the 14 through Kaplan and on to Lake Arthur eventually turning south onto the 27 at Holmwood. The 14 was a nice easy drive and reminded us of Alberta in the spring with LOTS of water. I don't know if it is a wet time of year or the HUGE storm that came through a few days ago, but the fields were ponds.

Once on the 27 we were officially on the Creole Nature Trail. This is a really nice website - I recommend a visit. Today we will be doing 1/2 of the trail - the rest heads north again on the 27 up to Sulphur.

We had planned to stop at the Cameron Prairie National Refuge Visitors Center for breakfast and to walk the boardwalk. And stop we did BUT

MOSQUITOES!!!

The moment we got out of the truck they descended upon us - hundreds I am sure. We quickly got into and stayed in the trailer - with lunch finished we quickly got back in the truck and drove off.

It was a pretty quick drive to the main town along the trail near the Gulf - Cameron. From this link you can learn about the history of Cameron - as we suspected it suffered great damage from Hurricane's Rita and Ike. We could tell that this place used to have a lot more going on. There are several new buildings and a lot of people are living in RVs.

At Cameron we took our first ferry ride of the day. It is a very short ride - we spent more time waiting for the ferry then actually on the ferry.

Waiting to get on the ferry. We were the last to get on - the ferry is shaped like a D. The cars drive on and go around the curve part. Because we are so long we get on last straight on to form the line of the D. Then we are the first to get off - pretty neat.

Continuing on we coame to Holly Beach and the end of the Creole Trail for us. The 82 along this strip travels right along the beach and so it was a nice drive. There are actually quite a few houses along this area - all on stilts. I had a brochure telling me that this was where the good shelling beaches were - I was pretty excited.

Finally! Beaches with whole shells!

Not so fast. Sadly, when Derek stopped the truck for us to get out we were again swarmed with mosquitoes. This was just not our day. My idea of beach walking and shelling was slipping away....fast.

And so - we just kept driving. You can see platforms in the distance.

As we got closer to Texas we saw A LOT of industry.

ahhhhhh Texas - it's good to be back. We missed you!

Not many pictures for the next while. We drove the 82 up to Port Arthur. My original plan had been to spend the whole day in Louisiana and spending the night at Walmart in PA. But since we sped through that area we were WAY ahead of schedule.

So on we went along the 73 and south of the 124 turning west on the 87 at High Island. Boy are we ever moving fast.

Before we knew it we were at the Port Bolivar to Galveston free ferry just as the sun was starting to set.

A container ship was going by as we were waiting to get on the ferry.

The ferry takes about 45 minutes so time to get out and walk around.

And look at our truck for above - hmmm - looks like our roof could use some paint. yikes!

The returning ferry arrived just as we were leaving.

And so that was our very long day of driving. Good thing we had TWO ferry rides to break up the trip.

Sad to leave Louisiana - Happy to be back in Texas.

Happy to be in Galveston. Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear you sea winds blowin'...............

Another song town if you have been following our blog for a while - I like visiting song towns. I have been pining to visit Galveston since we missed it in 2008.

Shucks Restaurant, Abbeville La

Once we reached Abbeville we went in search of Shucks. All we knew was that it was on Port Street but without a map we were stumped. We were on the 14 bypass and realizing fast that we needed to do something or we were going to sail right through this small city.

Would you believe just as we thought that there appeared the Visitor Center and Chamber. So Derek took a hard right into the parking lot.

What luck!

And further luck because just as I got out of the truck - Lynn from the Abbeville Chamber of Commerce was heading out the door. Great lady - we had a nice conversation and she was happy to give us the 'easy' route to Shucks. Good thing we stopped, I doubt we would have found it without Lynn's help.

But find it we did!

You may be thinking - boy these guys seem to be eating out a lot these days. And it does seem that way doesn't it. Now - let me explain that the Wood Clan doesn't eat out all that much. We would if we could but our lifestyle doesn't really leave room for such a luxury. If we had the $$ Derek and I would probably be happy with eating ALL of our meals out - it's not that we don't like to eat out....

Anyway, we have been out a bit more lately then usual because we LOVE seafood. We don't get it at home and we know this area is known for it's seafood - fresh seafood. We also knew that Abbeville would probably be our last chance to sample seafood in Louisiana for this trip.

The picture above is the three of us with Shucks Manager Rene' Hunt who was our server for our meal. Now - we just have to say that I don't think we have EVER been treated so well by a server EVER. Rene' took us newbies right under her wing and treated us like gold. Not only that but she was so preceptive to know that, although we wanted to try some real cajun food, we were on a budget. She gave us her honest opinion and really worked hard to suggest the best values and ways to sample Shucks food.

Thanks Rene' - we so appreciated the time you took with us!

I went and took a few pictures in the shucking room.

I started with a cup of the 'etoufee'. Which I have to say is the one of the best things I have EVER eaten.

Derek chose the seafood gumbo - another great choice.

We then shared the 'seafood platter'. Fried Oysters, Stuffed Crab, Shrimp, Catfish, Stuffed Shrimp, Oyster Boulette and Fries.

The plate may not look big but it packed a lot of food. So much so that by the end Derek and I could barely eat another bite. We LOVED it - it was all great.

And then would you believe Rene brought us a surprise!!!

Homemade Bread Pudding with Hot White Chocolate Buttered Rum Sauce! Now how can you pass that up - surely we could find some little corner of our stomachs for this!

All finished we bid a sad goodbye to Rene', she had become a friend. Just as were were leaving, Bert Istre, one of the Owners came by to say hello. How nice. Boy how special everyone has made us feel at this restaurant.

And good thing we inadvertently ended up there a little early - about 4:30. When we arrived there were a few people there - but as we were leaving there was a steady stream of cars coming into the parking lot.

No surprise though!

Our meal was one of the BEST I have had in a long long time. The last great meal we had was at Moon Spin Pizza in Thomasville.

The reason is because both of these fine establishments pay huge attention to detail and the QUALITY of the food!

Great people! Great food! at Shucks.

If you are anywhere in say a 500 mile radius :) of Shucks - go - you will LOVE IT!

Tabasco at Avery Island, Louisiana

After a morning of enjoying Lake Fausse Pointe State Park we made the short trip over to New Iberia. Since it was still so early in the day we decided to go straight to Avery Island about 11 miles west of New Iberia.

I had first read about the Tabasco Factory Tour from Kevin and Ruth who stopped in back in 2008.

Hmmmm - sounds like a good idea - and look - we will be going right by.

So - the Tabasco Factory landed a spot on our itinerary - after all I am the Wood Clan's Events Coordinator. We generally stop for factory tours especially if it is sweet - like our Chocolate tour last year in Henderson Nevada. But - hey - we love hot sauce - actually we like the combo of the two - chile chocolate. At our Mortlach Sweet Shoppe we sold a chile chocolate ice cream - hmmm - one of our favourites. Anyway, I digress....

We found our way to the factory easily after paying our $1 toll to the Island.

Once inside the tour begins with a 10 minute movie of the history of the McIlhenny Company and that of the Tabasco Sauce - very interesting - who knew? This in conjunction with receiving little itty bitty sample bottles - each of us got three so we really stocked up.

After the movie everyone exits through the next door to watch the manufacturing and bottling of this yummy sauce. Then on to an info room and outside.

Over to the Country Store.....

The sample counter at the back. Yum - we spent - oh - just a bit of time back here. We also sampled the Jalapeno and Sweet Spicy Ice Cream.

We'll take one of each - please!

After much consideration we purchased a few items. The Buffalo Tabasco Sauce, the Garlic Tabasco Sauce and a little Tin of Chili Chocolate. We COULD have gone crazy - so we chose and left. But first we had a nice conversation with the counter ladies.

One last swing before we leave - with our purchases.

And so that was a fun little trip to the Tabasco Plant. We really enjoy hearing and seeing where products we use come from.

Initially we were going to also walk around New Iberia and then spend the night at the Walmart there. However, as we were driving through we decided to forgo the downtown tour. Since Avery Island is on the west side of New Iberia it just made sense to carry on west down the 14 since it was also still quite early - 3:30 pm or so.

We drove as far as Abbeville, not too far away. Along the way I read to Derek the info about a restaurant called Shucks. Hmmm - sounded good. Abbeville, we knew, was going to be our last chance for some good ol' Louisiana seafood.

So Shucks it is!

Today's Interesting Link: We didn't go to New Iberia this time around but I am sure we will be back. Actually I don't think we are doing ourselves a favour by missing this whole area of Louisiana. BUT we love this State already even from the little we have seen and so I know we are sure to return - many times.

Lake Fausse Pointe State Park, Louisiana

Here we are at Lake Fausse Pointe State Park. If you have a few minutes to spare, please get comfortable, I have a lot of pictures and be forewarned there is going to be a lot of gushing about this place.

We found out about this state park from the friendly and helpful ladies at the Atchafaya Welcome Center yesterday. What can we say

this is THE best state park we have EVER been too

Except for maybe Picacho Peak State Park over in Arizona. They'd be tied I guess.... maybe .... hmmm ..... Lake Fausse Pointe is probably ahead by a hair.

Let me tell you - and show you -why!

Admittedly it is a bit of a drive in here to the park. Not so good if you want to tour around but great if you want some peace and quiet - just make sure you bring a lot of groceries.

We didn't - since this wasn't a planned side trip. The store is 25 miles away one way - so come prepared.

Derek and I knew it was the place for us as soon was we turned in and drove over the bridge - another jaw dropper - wwwwwwwwooooooooooooowwwwwwwww.

speaking of....

Our backyard so to speak BEFORE last nights storm.

While viewing these photos please imagine hearing a chorus of frogs in your mind - or better yet find some on yt to listen too. The sound of the frogs is almost deafening near the restroom building - LOVE IT.

There are a LOT of birds here. I won't even try to photograph any with our camera - beautiful red ones though.

Derek and I were up very early this morning about 6:30 I think. We were just glad to be able to step outside with no rain. We are also just so darn excited to be here we just couldn't sleep in. But some little sleepy head we know did - so it was nice for us to sit out and enjoy our coffee looking out at the trees and water.

The camp host stopped in this morning - there was 3" of rain last night. He also told us the park is 4' below sea level.

Since check out isn't until 1:00 we have decided to spend the morning enjoying ourselves. After breakfast we went for a walk to the nature trails. It is cooler (thankfully) then it has been but not too bad. Still clouds but the sun did shine a few times.

Of course our walk first took us past the playground - there are 2 here if you can imagine. Cassia is looking pretty excited - a full run.

Then off to the boardwalk and nature trails.

The trails were a little dicy this morning. Yes - I walked through this to get to Derek carrying Cassia.

Just after this photo the trails got REALLY wet and so we turned back. We met and talked awhile with a couple from Michigan on the bridge. We had been told that little itty bitty alligators were hanging out near the interpretive center so we headed over to take a look.

Hey - you can play 'spot the alligators' - hint - there are 3.

Heading back to our site meant passing by the playground again. Can't pass by without a stop in.

We're all HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY.

So - these last 24 hours have been a real highlight of the trip. We will definitely be back here - hopefully next year - with a weeks worth of groceries. It is not a bad deal $22 for the first night, $16 per night after that with water, electricity, dump, restrooms, showers, wifi and FREE LAUNDRY.

If those aren't the two most glorious words I have ever heard (at this moment) I don't know what they would be.

I am truly embarrassed to admit just how many loads we did - suffice to say we washed pretty much everything that can be washed in our trailer.

ahhh life is good. We survived the storm last night - albeit a bit rocked by the loud and thus very close lightening and thunder - but no high winds or tornado!

Happy to be in Louisiana

Today wasn't an exciting day - but - it was a GOOD day.

It was another early day. When we are traveling every day and stopping overnight in parking lots we tend to get up early - pack up and - go. We generally have a light breakfast and then another down the road.

Back on the interstate our main job for the morning was to get through Baton Rouge. Not a HUGE city or all that complicated, but we were on Interstate 12 that joined back up with I10 just east of Baton Rouge and then turned and divided into the I10 and I110.

The amount of traffic and all the on's and off's are what need to be kept track of. Which is my number one job - I'm Derek's Lane Coach - I help him to keep track of which lane to be in. We are getting really good at this and Derek did well under the pressure.

The Mighty Mississippi - again!

Is that blue sky I see - it has been days and days of grey.

Once we got through that we started to breath again. After Baton Rouge the Interstate goes on being the Interstate but with one exception.

We are on a VERY LONG BRIDGE.

Not to far west of Baton Rouge - there are two signs:

1. Trucks Right Lane next 18 miles.
2. No gas for 20 miles.

Both interesting - I guess the gas sign you see every once in a while but usually not on the interstate. The truck one perplexed me - why for 18 miles?

Anyway, I soon forgot them.

But after awhile of relative quite in our truck - Derek said - 'boy this is a long bridge'.

And you know what - it WAS a long bridge - hmmmmm

About 20 miles long - in both directions - 2 lanes each. So we ended up having a whole conversation about the feat it was to build these two 'bridges' over the swamp or bayou I guess would be the correct term here.

I googled the bridge and learned that it is called the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge - the twin bridges are 18.2 miles long - the 14th longest in the world. Pretty neat.

Speaking of the Welcome Center - yup - we stopped at another. There had been no rest areas to this point and with all the excitement of Baton Rouge and such we were happy to stop and rest and eat.

So, so, so glad we did.

THE nicest Welcome Center we have EVER visited. Great info and display inside, very very nice ladies, complimentary coffee, and beautiful grounds.

Note to our travel friends - you CAN park overnight at this WC.

We gained some great info from the ladies at the Welcome Center regarding New Iberia and area. We also learned of a State Park in the area. We weren't necessarily planning on a state park tonight - it was going to be the Walmart in New Iberia.

However, with a storm coming our way and in desperate need of some cleaning up we thought it might be a good idea. When I found out it had laundry and wifi - in addition to the water/electric hook ups and showers - it was a done deal.

And so we very quickly went from the Interstate and the surrounding bayou

to this nice country road leading us to the park.

We are now sitting comfortably at Lake Fausse Pointe State Park. The storm has just started and the rain is sure coming down. Heavy thunderstorms, wind and a possibility of a tornado have been forecasted.

A TORNADO!

It has been a very warm and humid day and evening. At least this is cooling things off a bit. But I certainly hope we are left intact.

Today's Interesting Link: If you know your geography - and the State of Louisiana - you will notice that we TOTALLY missed New Orleans. That's right. We are not going. We have never been and that is ok. We are not up to taking on this city this year. And after reading about Glenn's adventure just a few days ago we may never go - but hey - never say never - right!

Mississippi in a day

Another day - another State!

And if you have been with us for a while you may notice that this is the SECOND time that we have done Mississippi in a day on this trip - the first was back in December. hmmmmmm.....

After our great meal at Cornerstone in Pascagoula we headed just east on the 90 to the Walmart - our overnight place.

First thing Tuesday we were back on the 90 headed west to visit Mississippi's Gulf Coast.

The trip through the remainder of Pascagoula, Gautier and Ocean Springs was pretty uneventful, especially since the highway is traveling through the outskirts of these towns.

Things changed as we came over this bridge over the Biloxi Bay and into - where?

yup - Biloxi.

At this point the 90 becomes a scenic drive running parallel to the beach, although at first it starts off with a few casinos and hotels such as the Hard Rock. All new - as near as we can tell.

We were looking for a place to stop for breakfast and maybe a look around. My handy map showed the location of the Biloxi Lighthouse. I had read that you can climb it - for a fee - and so I figured it must have a parking lot.

Sure enough - just up ahead was the lighthouse, the visitors center, a parking lot, the beach and a pier.

EXCELLENT!

So we stopped - had breakfast and visited all those places above - well except for the lighthouse of course - but I did take a picture of it.

It was nice to walk the pier. The first one really - the last three we saw in Florida all charged for the pleasure.

After a few hours we were done and continued on our way.

I now need to stop and address an issue regarding the rest of the drive along the 90.

KATRINA!

Yup - she was here and she took almost everything along this strip.

Perhaps like us you were far away from this tragedy....sure we felt bad....but......

Well - now it puts the devastation all into perspective.

I mean - almost everything is gone!

sad.

Derek and I were shocked to see - a lot of of empty lots, a lot of for sale signs, many foundations, and on and on. There are some new buildings - hotels, casinos, condos but nothing like there was - obviously. There are also a lot of beautiful - expensive - homes. I wish I could have photographed some but we didn't stop. Not sure if they were damaged and fixed or built new - it was really hard to tell.

Anyway, the horrors of Katrina really hit home to us - you can see some of the pictures here.

In a way we were wondering why it is taking so long to rebuild - but obvious now looking at the pictures, they have spent all this time just getting it cleaned up.

This is how most of the 90 looks now from Biloxi through to Pass Christian. It is actually a very nice beach along here with good access.

I got one picture of one of the more humble homes.

We did see the 'blue lines' painted on the light poles showing the water levels during Katrina - WoW! and the 'tree sculptures' created from damaged trees. Alas - no pictures - sorry.

We ended our trip along this route by going into Buccaneer State Park on the west side of Waveland. Friends of ours how told us about it and we thought we MIGHT stay. Laundry was listed as one of the amenities but since they are still rebuilding I wasn't sure if they did or not.

We decided not to stay because there is no laundry and for $24 we needed to be able to justify the splurge. We carried on back to the Interstate stopping in at the Mississippi Welcome Center to check the internet since we did not know weather the Louisiana Welcome Center had wifi.

Then we stopped at the Louisiana WC just down the road. The LWC can be counted on for nice staff, good info and most importantly complimentary coffee. Having found a Home Depot in Covington we headed there for the night.

We were glad to see the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. We had a feeling that it wasn't really our place - especially with so many Casinos. But at the same time it is nice to see something to know that you have seen it and don't have to go back.

Alabama in a day

Tuesday was more of a travel day then a stop and look day. Originally the plan after Fort Walton Beach was to continue along the 98 into Pensacola and then along the 182 to Orange Beach and Gulf Shores.

More busyness and more beaches.....

Instead we decided to forgo this area for this year and to do something we rarely do - we headed for the Interstate - and Interstate 10 no less.

Just west of Fort Walton Beach we headed north on the 87 to meet up with the Interstate. It wasn't long before we were through Pensacola and out of Florida. So long Florida - it has been fun! We will hopefully visit you again sometime!

We stopped at the Alabama Welcome Center for breakfast.

Derek wanted a picture of this truck - he had been speaking with the driver. He is bringing honey bees from Florida to California. Derek was a bee keeper for a year back in his younger days.

I found it interesting that the colours were yellow and black.

Our next city to take on was Mobile. Actually it is a pretty smooth drive but this day it was pretty wet. There were a few minutes right here when we could barely see the road - not fun.

Between walking the trail, taking naps and spending some time on the internet we spent the afternoon at the welcome center. Since we had decided to spend the night at the Pascagoula Walmart, we didn't have far to go. I checked with the info people about a good seafood restaurant in Pascagoula. We want to be sure to get all of our seafood in in the next few days.

They suggested Cornerstone and were even nice enough to call to ensure they were open.

We were thrilled with their choice. We had seafood gumbo and po boys.

And so - that was Alabama in a day! I think this state is only about 66 miles along the interstate and so it isn't far.

I have very little battery power and so will end this now - sorry - no interesting link tonight!

Panama City Beach over to Fort Walton Beach

Here we are! Have you been waiting in anticipation for the next post - on the edge of your seats! LOL For those of you that follow along with us daily I should explain our situation. During our trip when we are moving fast everyday and stopping and looking along the way - getting a wifi signal and staying with it is sometimes a challenge. We are always working between a wifi signal and electricity - especially in the evenings. If we travel all day and can charge our laptop with the inverter and then stop at a Home Depot or Sam's Club we are good to go. Last night we had enough charge but stayed at the Walmart in Pascagoula and so no wifi. All very tricky and I must say at times

FRUSTRATING!

but hey - who wants to be on the internet every night anyway. Last night it gave us all the chance to sit back and enjoy Charlotte's Web - Derek had a good cry (Derek's permission to add this bit of insider information) - the relatively new one with Dakota Fanning.

Anyway - just thought I'd let you know why we disappear for days at a time.

Sunday morning at the Sam's Club in Panama City was all well until I heard the words from Derek "we have a flat tire".

UGH!

The culprit - a screw - Derek had the tire off faster then I could get out and get a picture with the wheel still on. He's quick.

In process....

Well - good news - we were right beside the tire installation bays of the Sam's Club - and even better - they open at 10 even though it is a Sunday. Only 1 1/2 hours to wait.

9:59 - the doors open and off goes Derek wheeling the wheel to the bay.......

10:01 - here comes Derek wheeling the wheel back to the trailer.

Nope - they won't do it since we are not members. grrrrrr

So Derek - thankfully he had unhitched the truck - drove down the street to Pepboys. Forty five minutes later he was back with a plugged tire - free of charge I might add - THANKS Pepboys.

Just thought I'd show you big rig stealth camping at it's finest. This IS an RV - you don't see them much in these parts but they are somewhat common over in Arizona. This rig spent the night with us at Sam's Club. A bit hard to tell what it is and a bit intimidating also - I'd hate to have to be the one to approach to tell them to move on.

On our way we continued west on the 98 out of Panama City. We took the 30 off to the right to go down to the scenic route that runs parallel to 98 but passes through all the ~~mayhem~~ hotels.

Sadly, the strip through Panama City Beach isn't the nicest area to visit - it is a blend of new and old that really isn't all that successful - a feast for the eyes to be sure - but in a stomach turning way. Lots of colours, lots of signs - it must be just crazy in the summer.

A great looking mini golf course - another thing for when Cassia is older.

Further up we came upon Pier Park - a very new development as you can see. I had looked it up the night before and so I knew that it was mainly shops. It does also have the Miracle Strip which would have made us stop because of the great rides - but wouldn't you know that it is closed down for Jan/Feb.

I would also have been tempted to stop at Margaritaville if I hadn't been there and done that in Las Vegas.

We carried on without really stopping until the public beach called the Boardwalk at Fort Walton Beach - about 60 miles from Panama City. This area is known for it's white sand beaches and so even though it was a bit foggy we decided to stop for a bit.

It's not called the Emerald Coast for nothing! Really beautiful colour of water.

Yup - looks a lot like snow. I would think that too except for the water .... now if you go to White Sands in New Mexico - you really need to remind yourself it is sand not snow - at least for us northerners.

As it was getting late and cool we made the short trip to the Home Depot in Fort Walton Beach where we spent the night. We didn't get far that day but we saw a lot.

Boy we sure ate our far share from Plant City and the Strawberry Palace. I sure do miss them. I know they are hard to find right now for most of you but maybe bookmark until summer.

Cape San Blas, Florida

Leaving from Apalachicola our plan was to head out to St. George Island - it wasn't on our original plan but geez the visitor center lady sure made it sound nice. But - for some reason we nixed that idea in favour of St. Joseph Peninsula.

St. Joseph Peninsula State Park had been our original destination - I had read nothing but good things about this park and the beaches along it. However, along the way I looked it up and realized it was about $26 to stay overnight - hmmmm - a bit pricey.

So instead we thought we would just head out and take a look. I had also heard good things about Cape San Blas.

Hmmmmmm - note to self - don't always take other people's word on things.

It isn't that they were bad - just not great.

We drove ALL THE WAY DOWN to the state park. By this time we had talked ourselves into staying the night since we had come this far and the day use parking fee was $6 anyway. At the gate house the lady - swatting the flies - gave us a map - told us to pick out a few sites we liked and come back.

Well - ok.

Odd.

We drove ALL THE WAY DOWN through the park - in and around the two campgrounds - sigh - busy and close sites - not worth the $26 to us.

Ok - let's just stay for the day and go to the beach.

Nope.

We got the beach and were completely swarmed with little black fleas or flies - so bad that Cassia was crying to get them off.

So we left. Almost running. And spent the first 5 minutes trying to rid the truck of the flies.

We drove ALL THE WAY BACK DOWN to just past Cape San Blas and pulled into a public park and beach access we had passed - oh - 20 miles ago or so. I got out and did a fly check - all clear.

And so we happily spent the remainder of the day at the beach!

We made lunch first and visited with this family from Ontario - renting a home in Cape San Blas - and here they showed up on the beach riding horses. Cassia was p r e t t y excited about that.

Hey - what's that dog doing without his leash! yaaaaaa a beach for Roofous. Poor Roofous - now a desert dog or a beach dog - no longer a snow dog.

Since this was ANOTHER quiet beach Cassia had the same outfit on as at Carrabelle Beach.

Nothing!

There were lots of these - jelly fish!

I think this was the most fun and the most walking/running Cassia has done on a beach so far.

hmmmm - note to self - don't let Derek have the camera. Me - doing what I do - picking shells. Actually - what I noticed was that many of the smaller shells had little holes at the top. So I collected a bunch thinking that I could string them together for a keepsake for Cassia.

Later in the afternoon the waves started to pick up.

And the fog moved in.

It started to get cool and so our day at the beach had come to an end. Back to the trailer we went for a little rest before leaving to find our overnight spot.

I had also read good things about Port St. Joe from Glenn at To Simplify - he stealth camped there for a week not long ago. But similar to St. Joseph Pen State Park - Port St. Joe didn't do anything for us and so we carried on - and on - and on.

Thankfully I had thought ahead and had researched the location of the Sam's Club in Panama City. And so - that is where we spent the night. All was well.

Two blog posts in one night! yaaaaaaaaaaa! Battery left to start the third!

Apalachicola, Florida

Leaving Carrabelle beach we continued west on 98 to East Point. It had a few potential parking spots for stealth camping as well as a few authentic Florida looking seafood restaurants. We didn't want to leave this area without getting Derek some oysters - this IS oyster country.

But - we just kept driving - you just never know what is down the road - 'we can always come back' we said to each other.

SO GLAD WE CONTINUED ON!

What did we find? Apalachicola - I can only now say it correctly - a pal ach i cola - it takes awhile to master.

Anyway, if someone had taken a picture of our faces as we drove in I think our jaws would have been dropped. What is this place? How come we have never heard of it? Actually, if I had been paying a bit better attention - Robin from Authentic Florida - had sung it's praises.

Our first stop after parking on the street was the visitor center - a map was a must.

It was late - almost 5:00 - almost quitin' time for this little place. After speaking with the visitor center lady and finding some much needed tourist info - including the best place to eat - we walked over to Papa Joe's.

Papa Joe's is one of those laid back kinda places at a marina where everyone goes for the food - not really the decor - I think. Anyway, Derek was pleased with his order of a dozen 1/2 shell oysters. He hadn't had any like this since Moon Dogs in Texas back in 2008.

I think Cassia was in the process of saying 'yucky' as mom was shaking her head in agreement. She and I were pretty happy with our shrimp poboy and fries.

Since it was getting late, and a bit cool we headed back to the truck and moved it over onto this vacant area beside the visitor center. Stealth camping is what we call it. Obvious you say - I guess - Apalachicola's downtown is very quiet at night - no one bothered us at all. Derek did go for a night walk around town with Roofous and was excited to report all he had seen - 'we'll go see it all in the morning'!

So - up pretty early - around 8ish - the 3 of us got ready and went for a walk. First through the downtown - out to the industrial area - to the boardwalk - the playground and back around through the downtown.

The Dixie Theatre - a bit of a landmark. A ballet from Tallahassee was performing the night we were there - if Cassia was older I would have been tempted to go.

The place that Derek spied the night before - hey - maybe we can buy a place like this - plunk our trailer on it and work on it over time. Nope - Derek found it on line - hmmm - prices are a teeny tiny bit higher then we would have expected - this place - an old tire shop with the tires stacked on the other side could be ours for a mere $150,000.

The old tire stores neighbour. Ahhhhh - now that would be the place for us.

We continued on to the boardwalk. A bit foggy that morning but it was pretty warm already.

I tried to sneak up on these brown pelicans. I got the picture just before they flew away.

Only then to have this fisherman sail by with his own flock. With my camera out I was ready for the shot.

And just so you don't think Apalachicola is just another pretty face - it IS a working town. Lots and lots and lots of oysters.

We went back to the trailer for breakfast and then went out again - this time with Roofous in hand - to the post office and the park. We were also going to stop in the Natural Wellness Store but it was closed since there was memorial in town that day.

After the post office I met up with Derek and Cassia at the park. There I met a couple from Huntsville, Alabama. They have a house down in Apalachicola and spent much time there in the past with their grand children - now grown. She (darn missed her name) was a nice lady to speak with - a realtor. She might come up to BC this summer with her 11 family members. So of course we gave her our info insisting that she contact us so that we can provide her with any info she needs to plan her trip up our way.

There were also a few boats from Michigan - wow - same idea as us - but with boats. I heard they were going down and around up to Seattle - now THAT is an adventure.

Apalachicola, Apalachicola, Apalachicola how we love thee!

Yes, my friends Micanopy MIGHT be moved out of top spot. It is a tough one. Micanopy still wins for a quaint, lost in time downtown. What we like about Apalachicola as a place to spend more time is that it is also quaint, has lots of shops to poke around in, is very slow paced, friendly people and there are beaches really close by - like Carrabelle Beach - which was very very quiet. I figure it is probably always that way.

I guess they would be tied - I would hate to have to pick one over the other.

Sitting here now looking at the pictures I feel like the charm of the place isn't really coming through. Not much I can do about that - but trust me - if you are going through - STOP and see for yourself.

It is a few days now since we were there. I think as we got further and further away, Derek and I became sadder and sadder. We probably should have lingered there a little longer. Yes - we did know that we found a great little spot - but - we have never been along this stretch before and were still excited about moving west. Now - sitting here in Fort Walton Beach tonight we realize it WAS the best.

As we were heading out we drove through the historic homes district and were now really kicking ourselves that we didn't do a walk about through the neighbourhood.

Darn, darn, darn!

Oh well - there is always next year - right?

Today's Interesting Link: Apalachicola reminded Derek and I of Cowichan Bay, just on a larger scale. Cow Bay is also a quaint little fishing village that we used to live close to on Vancouver Island. Being 10 minutes drive away we could be found there quite regularly going for pizza, strolling around the marina with Udder Guy's Ice Cream in hand. Boy do we miss that place. Check out the website - I LOVE the art work.

Carrabelle Beach

Pretty late Friday morning we headed south on the 319 out of Crawfordville where we had spent the night. Not before stocking up on - smokes for Derek @ $10 a carton and propane from the Ace Hardware. For all you travelers out there we have found Ace Hardware stores to be very reliable for propane sales.

One of the first destinations we had in mind, now on the 98, was a restaurant in Panacea called Angelos. The fellows at the Grassroots Coffee in Thomasville had tipped us off to this place - 'the best seafood around'. However, it wasn't even noon and since I haven't been feeling well the last thing I felt like was seafood. So we carried on. Through Ochlockonee Bay - through Saint Teresa :) - and through Lanark Village.

Although this strip of highway runs parallel to the beach - it isn't RIGHT on the beach - it actually goes through trees - which is ok - it was nice.

The town of Carrabelle was the first to offer a possibility to stop and look. However, 2 of my 3 maps showed a rest area at Carrabelle Beach - perfect. And yes - I travel with THREE maps on my legs - they are all great - but all different - it helps to be VERY informed while on the road. I also sometimes have my ipad open to google maps too! I take my navigator job VERY seriously. I screw up now and then however.

So - we stopped at the rest area at Carrabelle Beach.

Happy, happy, happy!

Why? Because in addition to being one of those nice white sandy beaches we have heard and read about there was almost

nobody there!

and yup we are still in Florida. Carrabelle Beach has got to be one of the best kept secrets. shhhhhhhh

We weren't fools - we know how hard this is to find - plus it was hot - we stayed for most of the day.

Sorry - no pics of Cassia this time although she certainly enjoyed herself. Since no one was about except for a few walkers - and mainly women anyway - we decided to let her be nude. Up until now we have always put a suit on her - but if you can't run free on a beach at 2 1/2 years old when can you - right?

We had a great day at Carrabelle Beach and HIGHLY RECOMMEND it if you are coming this way. The one thing that struck us that day was that on the way - from about St. Teresa to the beach there were nothing but FOR SALE signs - I mean every thing - all the houses - the nice kind up on stilts - were for sale. If you are looking for some Florida gulf coast property that maybe the place. Looks like a few tried to make some quick money building spec homes before the bust.

We left the beach shortly before dinner to find ourselves an overnight spot. We hit the jackpot in a little town called Apalachicola! ahhhh Apalachicola.....

Could Micanopy have a contender!

You'll have to wait and see....oh do I wish I could do that post tonight - oh to have a generator. I have a great wifi signal here at Sam's Club but not much of a battery. So - it will have to wait - it will be worth it - trust me - this is some town.

Manatee Springs State Park

Manatee Springs State Park. WoW!

It seems so strange to have been there - it was a place that we talked about so many times last summer. You see - our trip to Florida changed many many times. First we were just going to do the north - but then we thought - 'well if we are going that far may as well go to the Keys' - then of course we nixed Florida altogether. No matter what our plan was for Florida - it always included a stay at

Manatee Springs State Park.

Not sure why exactly - it just appealed to us - and to be able to see Manatee. I think was first set it off was that Derek remembered his brother telling him about - he and his girlfriend were here back in the 90's. Last summer when they were visiting us at the Park they told us about it again. We just HAD to see it for ourselves.

Of course the first stop was the playground. Neat swing.

Cassia and I were on our own for a walk while Derek got things set up at the site. So we toured the springs and took a walk along the boardwalk to the Suwannee River.

We dipped our toes in the springs at the swimming area - 72F - a bit cool today but it must be lovely in the summer.

These are the roots of the trees - they come up through the ground to provide air. Nope - wrong - Derek Googled that - it was once believed it was for air but alas not true - the experts say.

All was going well at the Manatee Springs State Park in site #1 until about 6:30 am Wednesday morning....drip, drip, drip.

YUP - RAIN!

It rained ALL day! So we decided to stay for another night - turn on the heat and the movies and stay inside. I did venture out to the camp host to see about paying for our night when we left - it was a mile to walk up to the gate house. He radioed the ranger who came to us for payment - nice!

Cassia didn't mind the rain.

Derek had to pile the sand around the camper to divert the water.

Thursday morning the sun had returned and so the three of us walked out to the River. Since check out wasn't until 1:00 pm we thought we would enjoy the morning taking a walk.

Of course Manatee Springs gets its name from the fact that the Manatee come up to enjoy the warmer waters. It was nice to be able to see them there - although they were at a bit of distance.

I know - hard to see - but they ARE there.

And with that we loaded back up and headed north again out of Chiefland. Manatee Springs State Park is a very nice park - very quiet and restful. I think however that their funding must have been cut a bit as the restrooms are on the old side and could use a revamp.

Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

Having spent Monday night at Walmart just down the road - we arrived early to the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park. Good news was that the large parking lot was made even larger by having overflow parking on the grass - with a bit of shade.

I had read about this park on several blogs and at Authentic Florida - everyone raved about it and so I thought we should visit. We are glad we did and even gladder that we came first thing in the morning to have the place almost to ourselves - by lunchtime when we left the place was filling up FAST.

One of the things we were excited about and thus got Cassia excited about starting the day before was the boat ride from the Visitor's Center to the wildlife area. Boy were we disappointed to find out that because the water was so low the boats weren't operating. Oh well - we got a tram ride instead.

Our first stop was to see Lou the Hippo. Lou is turning 52 soon and is being honoured with a birthday party. I haven't seen a hippo in person in quite a while.

The park is set out in two loops - the first housing all the animals in pens along the outside with the migratory birds in the middle. I sooooo enjoyed seeing the flamingos - these ones are a lot darker pink - more orange really.

To the right were the Red Wolves but I didn't take a picture - I don't much like taking pictures with a chain link fence in the way. They were beautiful though.

We had decided to leave Cassia's stroller in the truck but were sure happy to see that strollers were provided!

Ok - so one shot through the fence - a Florida Panther!

Another alligator - gee they are almost common place on this trip now.

We also stopped in to the Reptile House - not typically my favourite stop but at least the little critters are behind the glass.

These guys were neat - little alligators - even cute - Derek befriended this one - he followed Derek up and down the tank.

And oh so cute turtle - turtles I like....

snakes I don't! They had a whole bunch of snakes but don't want to scare you all off!

The first loop leads into the second - the Manatee area. This was our first encounter with the Manatee. Well we have seen probably hundreds of Manatee throughout our trip - as statues of all sorts and most commonly as mail box at the end of driveways.

Today wasn't really our day. We DID see the manatee out in the water but only a few happened to put their noses up while we were there. But still nice to see them! Did you know they are Florida's State Mammal?

No worries we thought - we will head to the underground observatory - we are bound to see Manatee there. Well no - but we did see a whole lot of fish!

And so that ended our trip to the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park. We took these two pictures below just as we were leaving.

From the other blogs I read I thought this would be a whole day outing but for us it wasn't - 2 1/2 hours was the best we could do. Probably with older children - with a little more patience and understanding - it could be a day trip. No matter - we all enjoyed ourselves to make the $26 entry fee worthwhile.

Our plan was to stay Tuesday night at the Home Depot in Crystal River but since it was only 1:30 by the time we had lunch we decided to travel on to our next destination - Manatee Springs State Park.

Crystal River Preserve State Park

Monday we said a sad goodbye - or see you later - to Barbara and Terry. Before we left we were able to empty and fill our tanks and after playing in the sand Cassia got a bath. All set - we hit the road.

From Barbara and Terry's we found our way back to the 39 north. We DID cross over the 60 - again - but still loaded with fruit from the Strawberry Palace we didn't stop in but continued north on the 39 through Plant City. We also passed the Red Rose Inn where we stayed for the Grace Conference not too long ago.

We continued on the 39 until just below Zephyrhills where we took a right on Chancy Road. Barbara and Terry tipped us off to Chancy - a bypass that meets back to the 39 just above Dade City. That's what's great about knowing the locals!

Anyway - we made our way to Brookville and then on to Homosassa Springs. It didn't take us very long.

So we headed north to the Cyrstal River Preserve State Park - a rare state park with free entrance.

Good thing too cuz there isn't much there!

We stayed parked in their lot for the afternoon - took a few walks and then a nap.

We stayed until sunset - looked like a shrimp boat going out for the night.

So - not the most exciting of days - but it got us closer to the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park where we went on Tuesday.

We stayed at the Homosassa Springs Walmart for the night. Good news! Seems that you can add it to the list of Walmarts in Florida that you CAN overnight. We were no alone - when we drove in there were three other rigs. We were happy to see them!

You just never know

You just never know - seemed like an apt title for this post - on two counts.

The first - you just never know

is the fact that last Friday we actually got to attend a bible study in person with Pastor Curt Crist.

The timing of our being here just when Curt and Debbie were down from Asheville, North Carolina was just too amazing. We have been listening and watching Pastor Curt's videos for almost two years now and have learned so much from his teachings. He is a super speaker and teacher. It was bit of a marathon day. We didn't get out of the hotel until about eleven with still a few stops to make on our way to the teaching about 5 miles south of the 39 and 60. Just east of the hotel we stopped at Walmart to stock up and then on to the Strawberry Palace for another - yes - another load up of fresh fruit and veggies. If you are counting it was our third time to this great place.

When we arrived at the location of the bible study we were offered lunch and all sorts of treats. The teaching went from about 1 - 4 and then 6 - 8. I have to say that Cassia did very very well. Every Church we have been to and the Bible Conference have had playrooms. And so Cassia was pretty quickly scoping out the place. We created a little play space for her beside us with her own toys.

When it was done we bid adieu to Curt and Debbie who had to drive all the way back to Asheville the next day. It was a bit sad for us - we had just gotten to know them and were enjoying the fellowship - time sure flies.......

We followed Barbara and Terry back to their place not to far from the Bible Study. Thus leading to the

second - you just never know

you just never know when two great people and new friends are right around the corner. We have been blessed to spend the last two nights - and tonight the third - parked on Barbara and Terry's property - enjoying their hospitality and generosity.

Cassia has taken a particular liking to Barbara - how could she not?! I think it is because she is a blend between my mom - Cassia's Oma and Derek's mom - Cassia's Gram Gram. Barbara is also just one of those people kids (and adults :)) are drawn too - being a mother down to a great grandmother must have something to do with it. We have so enjoyed being here!

We have spent a couple of days enjoying being parked. The nights have been cool - I think last night was 36 F - and so have been just thrilled to have electricity for the heater as well.

Today we spent sometime playing (as we did yesterday) with the neighbour kids - Emma and Jake. Super kids - we really enjoyed kicking the ball around with them and such. Derek also spent some time with the map in hand showing them where we live and what it is like - 'up there in Canada'.

And so, for me these last few days, and our whole trip really has been a big

you just never know

I could never ever have planned or predicted how our trip this year would have gone. To have been able to meet such wonderful teachers and to have been able to fellowship with our brethern has made it a trip of a life time really. Yes, we have seen a lot of great scenery and such - and don't get me wrong - that is really great - but the learning and visiting and friendships that we have found has been the true blessing.

I could go home now and be happy!

Well, lets not go crazy - it is colddddddddd up there in BC. Oh and by the way, as of yesterday Saturday, January 14th we have been on the road for

3 months

Boy has it gone fast. For the first month or so it felt really slow but now time just seems to be flying by. And so on that note, tomorrow we will continue our trek northward. We won't be going to far - back up past Zephyrhills and Dade City - crossing a path and then on to the 98 headed to the coast - should be about 75 miles. We are going to Homosassa Springs to spend tomorrow night at the Walmart. Fingers crossed that it is ok - they are not on the 'no overnight parking' list.

Today's Interesting Link: As you may have noticed we haven't visited any theme parks, zoos or aquariums while in Florida. They are EVERYWHERE it seems and so it is a bit weird that we haven't been to any. The main reason is cost - they are pretty expensive. And with Cassia being 2 1/2 years old we are just not sure how much she will get out of them. BUT we are going to splurge on the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park Tuesday. It seems like it will be our kind of place - for all 3 of us. If all goes well, we will spend Tuesday night at the Home Depot - with wifi - and I can post the pictures then.

We'll miss the hot tub

A double header tonight! I wanted to add this post - to conclude our stay here at the Marriott - particularly while we still have non stop electricity and wifi. Good thing we are leaving tomorrow because

we could get used to this kind of living!

You could probably see this coming, and I guess we could too but just didn't want to think about it - but we will definitely have trouble detaching ourselves from this place. I think Cassia too - who was the most suspicious, has come to see why mom and dad were so excited last Monday.

This morning we decided to start the day with our Black Sapote - it was FINALLY time. This was one of the exotic fruits we picked up at Robert Is Here just outside of the Everglades National Park. When purchased it was green = unripe. The clerk told Derek to wait until it becomes black and mushy. mmmmm appetizing...

We figured it was now or never.The black Sapote is also called the chocolate pudding fruit - which was what REALLY got our attention and why we bought it. Guess we should have read the fine print.

It LOOKS like chocolate pudding it does not TASTE like chocolate pudding!

So disappointment and a general sense of displeasure quickly set in. I was the one that ended up eating it as Derek and Cassia lost interest after a few bites - the problem?

It has NO taste! Can you believe that. I don't care that it didn't taste like chocolate - although that would have been a great breakfast - but it sure would have been nice if it had a taste. Pass it by if you see one.

The morning and early afternoon continued on like every day this week - not much. We did take a trip to the pool and hot tub of course.

Early afternoon we got a call from Pastor Curt - the deliverer of the deviled crab I told you about last night. So off he and Derek went to Brocato's Sandwich Shop - an institution here in the Tampa area. They don't have a website but you can check out the great reviews at the link. It's one of those places that is ALWAYS busy - we are glad that we got a chance to sample their food.

And so the the three of us sat with Pastor Curt enjoying our late lunch and some great teaching. Actually, one of the blessings of the hotel was not only the physical comforts, but being able to be close to Pastor Curt and his wife Debbie (whom we hadn't met in person until last Monday) so that we could visit with them and begin our bible study before tomorrow's bible study.

Since that took the rest of the afternoon and we were stuffed from the cuban food we didn't have dinner. Instead we headed back to the pool room for one last dip in the pool and hot tub. This time I brought the camera and was able to catch the old man (of now 47) doing a back flip in the pool - to impress his daughter no doubt. Sadly, the few hot tub pics I took have hit the cutting room floor.

And so, in the morning we say goodbye to the Marriott. We are headed back to where the 39 meets the 60 and heading south a few miles. Of course if you have been following along with us those 2 roads will sound familiar. Yup

that's where the STRAWBERRY PALACE is located.

I think we'll have to stop back in to see our new friends there - just in time too - we just finished our 2 - yes 2 - containers of strawberries.

The bible study with Pastor Curt will take up the day and we'll be parked at one of the brethern tomorrow night. Kinda hoping there is a place to plug in since 38 F or 3 C is expected for Saturday night. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! are we NOT in southern Florida?

Come this weekend we are headed - NORTH - which was inevitable. Problem is that this whole time we have been headed south. I didn't stop and really think about it when we were in Key West. It was the most south we could go - everything else was now north. Oh well - there is still so much to see. We are really excited to see the north western side of Florida and of course the gulf coast areas.

By the way, I have been really bad in keeping y'all up to date on our expenses for the last few months. Suffice to say that we are KIND OF on budget. We are staying pretty close to our $1,000/month budget but we have been going over a bit. We definitely splurged in December - mainly due to the cost of things in Florida and paying for some camping. We have managed to stay under $400 for food which is good.

Also, just to let you know we have now travelled 8,809 kms or 5,474 miles! WoW! a longgggggg way - eh? To date gas has cost us $1,624 so still between 29-30 cents a mile. At the moment we may exceed the budget I had in mind of $3,000 for gas - my rational being that we are 1/2 through our trip and so I will have to double the $1,624.

But I don't think that is totally true - our trip home should be shorter - I think - I'll get back to you on that!

Beautiful British Columbia -The West Coast

We temporarily interrupt this travel blog about the southern USA with a side trip to the West Coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia Canada. Derek and I see so much beauty every winter on our trips south to the USA but we always remember - and are happy to tell people that we meet - that we come from a very beautiful place as well.

With all of our pictures and stories of the Florida beaches we visited around Christmas - my sister was suffering from a severe case of beach envy. And so - not far from beaches themselves - my sister and her husband set out over the holidays to the coast.

Now if you have never been or seen pictures this is a particularly beautiful part of the world and draws tourists from around the world. The most popular town in the area is Tofino, however Ucluelet is also beloved.

On this day my sister and her husband visited the beaches of Wickaninnish, South Beach and Florencia. The tide was in and the waves high, there were some anxious moments as David headed for higher ground on a rock and my sister ran for the beach.

Diana and David live just south of Duncan BC and so this was quite the drive for them - there and back in one day. Plus they walked and walked for the day - I can imagine they were sore from all the sitting and walking from the day.

To get from one side of the island to the other they need to drive over a mountain pass - not HUGE - but enough to encounter snow. YES, they do get SOME snow on Vancouver Island.

Yikes! Driving in snow - not so fond memories.

Hotel lay abouts

I told you we would think of something to fill our days here at the hotel - and I am happy to report that we have. And while we could go to - say - the Florida Aquarium, or Busch Gardens, or the beaches and PJ's Oyster Bar at St. Pete, as suggested by our good friend Scott - we have decided to do

absolutely nothing - nothing - nada - zip

except to be lay abouts here at the hotel - passing our time away in bed, in the hot tub, eating fruit and of course our favourite past time - on the good ol' internet.

Odd you say - when we have so much at our disposal. Sure - I can see that. But once again we are stationary and happy to be so because it is free and there is NO TRAFFIC here in our room. The thought of taking on all those roads to the west of us just to get to these places makes our stomachs hurt.

This little leap into luxury will be over before we blink and so we have just decided to sit back and enjoy. Although I have to say it is a bit odd feeling.....to be out of the camper and all.

No worries - we found her a nice place to park just out back.

Fortunately, we were able to get a ground floor room WITH a sliding door back entrance to the parking lot. And so a visit to the camper is just a short walk away. Very handy of course because well, although we are staying in a hotel we still need to eat.

Our vacation brains are saying - 'well you are in a hotel - that means all meals out' - but our budget is saying 'you can cook all your meals in the camper' - darn! We did think ahead and stocked up on our way to the hotel and so we are good to go.

We aren't being completely lazy however, Cassia and I did venture out yesterday to join Derek and Roofous on their walk, albeit a short one. Nowhere to go in this big bad city. And so we headed down to stroll past the two Hiltons and back again.

Upon our return we cut through a bit of grass between the sidewalk and the parking lot. Admittedly it was steep which didn't bother Derek and I but of course Cassia could only manage by getting on her hands and knees. For the record, I did offer to help her - but you know independent toddlers. All was well until she was suddenly

completely freaking out

If you can believe she was totally covered with itty bitty ANTS - the biting kind! As I was helping her they bit me too and believe me they hurt. The poor kid - I worked as fast as I could to get them off - even taking her clothes off on the spot - but too late - the damage was done!

Cassia has no luck with ants - this was her THIRD encounter on the trip. I wouldn't blame her if she ends up having an ant phobia.

She hasn't even mentioned them but they don't look so good.

That was yesterday. Today we woke to this - a cloudy sky and threat of thunder storms. They came through all right at about 11:00 am when this first shot was taken out our sliding door.

And so what was there to do but head to the pool and hot tub just down the hall. Well the hot tub really. The pool here is SO COLD it isn't really possible to swim. I know you are thinking - come on - how cold can it be - ICE COLD - it is indoor but I don't think it is heated. Derek and I have both been in but more to entertain Cassia then for enjoyment. She doesn't even go it - she just likes to watch us squirm.

Ahhhh the hot tub.

When we got back to our room the rain was really coming down. Lightning and thunder - very ok - we enjoy a really good thunderstorm and haven't seen one since last summer.

Of course we are not used to actually STANDING out in the rain - particularly in the month of January. In July or August at home - MAYBE - but the rain may not be warm. Not as warm as it was here today. Even with the clouds and rain I think it was well into the 70's. Ahhhhhhhh.........

All of us ended up in the rain for some reason. I had to run out to close the vent in the trailer and get our lunch. Derek stood in it just because he could - and well - you know kids - Cassia just couldn't wait to go out in the rain. Strange though - she came back from the pool in her bathing suit and I offered for her to run around in the rain but she insisted that she needed to get dressed. She was even trying to get us to get her rain coat and boots - so information IS going in - WoW!

hmmmm - not sure if I am feeding Derek enough....

So that is the kind of two days it has been. I think I got a pretty good post out of talking about nothing much (you know like a Seinfeld episode). And if you made it through and can't wait for more - tomorrow nights post should suite you just fine because tomorrow promises to be another DO NOTHING day.

Well not totally true - I saw a laundry room down the hall!

We have been promised deviled crab tomorrow from Curt and Debbie. Can't wait for that - not to worry I will include photos so that the rest of you can drool over them.

Today's Interesting Link: Any other designers out there? I love design - I am a designer at heart - I just haven't done much lately, unfortunately. I won't get on my soap box but lets just say it is tough going to make a living as a designer these days. I am trained as an architect and do still love to look at great design - there are lots of blogs and websites out there for me to get my fill. Since I am most interested in residential design Hooked on Houses is one of my favourites - I have been a fan for a while now and I am definitely NOT alone. Julia gets A LOT of hits. Since I have 'liked' her on fb I also get daily updates. I loved this house profiled today and the design firm connected to it FAB architecture.

Plant City, Florida

As we have mentioned in a few posts now, we came up to Plant City (just east of Tampa) on Friday for the Florida Grace Conference, a conference put on by the Grace Church's of Florida (Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth). We heard about this conference somewhere between our drive from Jerry Lockhart's Church in New Braunfels Texas to Steve Gotberg's in Montgomery Alabama - I can't remember exactly how - undoubtedly through fb.

Looking at the map, our first thought was - NOPE - can't do it - just look at all those roads - WAY to busy for us!

However, upon closer inspection it looked like we may just be able to squeeze through on a less traveled road. Sure, ok - well MAYBE we can do it.

Well of course after all the mayhem of Southern Florida Derek has become quite the pro on these busy roads and so really the trip into Plant City was pretty darn easy. We are glad we came.

Although we had written to the Red Rose Inn & Suites weeks ago to inquire about whether or not we could park in their lot for the duration of the conference, we hadn't heard back. So, we were a bit worried about where we would be staying. Fortunately, and we are very thankful, the front desk girl didn't even blink and directed us to the back by the conference hall - to a nice and quite area with even a bit of grass! What a spot!

Doesn't even look like we are parked in a hotel parking lot. There is a strip of rooms to the right but they weren't renting them over the weekend.

We had a great weekend. Great teaching from the various Pastors and we met some great people and families. Great, great, great..... (I may need a new word).

AND - Maude - remember her from Valdosta - was there - a total surprise for us! Boy - do we ever love Maude. Maude's family - sister's, brother in laws, and nieces live in the Tampa area and also attended the conference. Maude has one of those families that you wish you were a part of so you would have an excuse to hang out with them - what wonderful people. We will miss Maude - we invited her to come visit us at home - she smiled and didn't say no - so who knows.....fingers crossed.

We also met a family from the Jacksonville Florida area - Laura and Mark and their six kids. Cassia and I spent some time in the playroom and with the 3-5 year olds and we met Laura and her kids there. It was nice to see Cassia interacting with other kids albeit all much older then her. Later we met up with Laura's husband Mark. They are considering - maybe - going out on the road. Of course, I am always willing and ready to pass on information about such a lifestyle as ours. Roofous was also very popular this weekend and was visited regularly by both the kids and adults.

The conference ended on Sunday around noon and pretty quickly everyone was gone - more goodbyes to new friends. Derek went to check if we could stay where we were for the night and got the ok.

So what are we doing still here?

I am glad you asked. Last week when we posted on fb that we were headed to Plant City - a fb friend commented that Pastor Curt Crist was going to be in Plant City also - January 9th!

Well now that is just too crazy for words.

Derek and I have been learning through Pastor Curt Crist by way of his videos on the internet for a few years now. Since he lives in North Carolina we thought that we wouldn't meet him until next year's Grace Trail of Fellowship.

So we quickly got in touch with Curt (also a fb friend) to set up a meeting - we thought we could meet for lunch and be on our way OR if we could find a place to park we could stick around for his bible study on the 13th. Thankfully Curt found us a place to park our rig.

BUT THEN - last night he wrote to us that his daughter had to cancel her trip at the last minute and her hotel room was available since it was non refundable. Would we like the room from Monday to Thursday?

YES!

And so today we got ourselves ready and headed back down the 39 to the 60 to come here, closer to Tampa. Imagine our excitement when we realized we would have to go right by the Strawberry Palace.

Of course a return visit was in order. We still needed to try their cuban sandwiches and we may as well get some more strawberries.

And so we got to visit with our Strawberry Palace friends again. Stay tuned a third trip may come to pass since the bible study is back towards this area.

Speaking of this area - we are in love with it.

Oh Plant City, Plant City, Plant City how we love thee... ha ha - just joking.

But yes - we feel very comfortable here. We drove through the historic downtown (well we had no choice the 39 goes right through). Anyway, the area feels just like the Okanagan area of BC to us and specifically Keremeos where we used to live - lots of fruit stands. And so - it is now officially on the list of places to consider living longer term during the winter. We loved Micanopy for it's old Florida feel and quietness, we love this area for the agriculture and easy access (well not quite easy - but accessible anyway) to our favourite beaches near Sarasota.

AND before I forget - a huge ***HAPPY BIRTHDAY*** to my husband Derek - 47 years old today - yup! He's not lookin' too bad now is he for an old grey stallion (his words)! Since his birthday is at this time of year we are always on the road - last year was a bit of a dud since we were freezing our butts off at Imperial Dam. But here he was in 2008 - all smiles in Texas.

And so - here we are, feeling pretty darn fine in our room at the Marriott (not our usual - we are usually in the no-tell motel types). The truck and trailer are nicely tucked in a corner with grass for Roofous and shade during the day for all of the animals. It is HOT here right now.

We have been to the pool room TWICE already - first when we arrived and then for a swim after dinner. Cassia isn't nearly as happy with the whole thing as mom and dad, wishing for the camper. But she is fast asleep in our HUGE king sized bed. Ahhhh the luxury of running water and non stop electricity.

So - we have 3 days stretching out in front of us. I have NO idea when we are going to do but we will no doubt think of something. Right?

A Life Made Simple is our - the Wood clan's - travel blog. But really it is a blog about our life - our life is travel and we are happy to share our experiences with all of you - about our travels and our lives - good and bad.

And since this blog is about our lives - today is an important time in our life. We all have them.

It is a memorial day.

Ten years ago - January 8th, 2002 at 3:30pm -

my Dad - Mr. Gerritt (Jerry) Johannesma -

passed away at the age of 64 of lung cancer.

Shortly thereafter I spoke these words at his funeral. A few excerpts:

I only travel with one picture of my parents together - this is it - a picture of a picture.

"As I write this tribute to you I am sitting in your workshop where you spent so many hours, your workshops always brought comfort to me, they were such a part of our homes. As I look around there is so much of you here, your certificates hang on the walls, your tools and odds and ends are all nicely organized - you spent days in there just a few months ago with the music on putting everything in its proper place. I can still see you in the 'just perfect' seat we bought you at the second hand store working on your new model boat. It was a new challenge that you were unsure of, but I knew you could get the end rounded just right. Now it stands unfinished but so beautiful. I remember the day we went to Victoria to buy it and stopping in at the Dutch Bakery for a treat, like it was yesterday.

You were a good man Dad, a good husband, and a good father. You gave us your best I know. You touched many lives while you were here and we will be forever thankful for your presence. Mom chose you well. As the head of our family you led with strength and honor, even though I'm sure you wondered many times what you would do with a house full of women. Together with Mom you raised Diana and I well, teaching us by example, instilling in us independence, and the importance of hard work and perseverance. Although it does seem that I was tutored more than Diana in the fine art of hardheadedness - uh - I mean determination. In our childhood you were a quiet presence always there to help out with our school projects and as adults letting us know that you were there if we needed you, but allowing us the space to find our own way. We did a lot together as a family, I will always remember the camping trips when we were little and then destinations further away as we got older, they were good times.

All of these things and so much more made you the man you are and I am honored to be your daughter. But the time has come for us to part ways.

We thank you Dad for being a part of our family and for your love and guidance and for your strength and patience.

Thank you for your creativity and skill of making things that Diana and I are blessed to carry on.

And I thank you Dad, for passing on to me your love of construction and buildings.

Thank you for the wisdom you shared and the time you took to pass on your experience, teaching me about fire doors as we were waiting to see the doctor."

Derek and I met while I was living with my dad during his final 6 months. We spied each other across the seniors park. So, the two important men in my life traded off I guess. My dad exited my life shortly after Derek entered.

And so, it seems fitting that every year I celebrate them in two days - today my dad died - a memorial, tomorrow is Derek's birthday - a celebration.

To know about my dad is to know me - where I hail from. Thanks for letting me spend some time reflecting and yes well crying my way through this post. I bet you will take some time to think about your loved ones also - whether they are with us physically or not - I hope so!

to Highlands Hammock State Park and beyond

Bidding the Everglades a fond farewell we began our trip north. Brian, whom we had met at the Park had prepared us well for the trip along 27 explaining to us the various areas we would be traversing. As a born and raised Southern Floridian he was spot on.

We backtracked our way back up the 997 crossing paths with the 41 which we had come east on. We continued through to the 27. It was actually a very sad drive as there was not a thing to look at but empty land and A LOT of dead trees. I always feel homesick in such areas.

Anyway, we quickly reached the 27 and taking a left began our journey on this large 4 lane divided highway - or is it 2 lane divided? Derek and I had this discussion in the truck - 2 lanes either side - divided.

Exciting travel talk eh?!

I always feel bad that our posts show little of the 'in between time' the actual time we are on the road. Yes, I do so some but compared to all the miles we travel precious few of those end up here.

So - here are a few along the way......

Hard to tell it is Florida - right?

Although we hadn't been driving too long we turned into the John Stretch Park just north of South Bay. A great park for a rest - we were sad that we had just had lunch at a rest area. No matter - we could all use a walk and a trip to the playground. If you are ever this way it is worth pulling in to.

I imagine you could walk for hours along this walkway - it lines Lake Okeechobee.

Back on the 27 we entered the Sugar Cane growing area. I don't know - I don't think we would have known what these farms were growing if Brian hadn't mentioned. I don't think I knew what sugar cane looked like out in the field - do you? Well - this is it. Not the best picture in the world.

Derek and I almost became obsessed with getting a good picture. For miles we were in awe at the beauty of the sun illuminating the pink flowers (seed heads) of the canes from behind. BUT - do you think there was a place to pull off and get a good picture? Nope.

We did actually pull off to take this picture but not quite what we were going for.

Next, came the orange groves. Again - no real chance for a good picture while moving. BUT this was our first look at orange groves in Florida.

Our destination this day was the Highlands Hammock State Park near to Sebring. Although we only had 72 miles to go, with leaving late and stopping along the way, we pulled in just before dark. Lest you think that south central Florida is quiet compared to the coast areas it isn't just all sleepy little towns. We were surprised that the area around Lake Placid and Sebring - just little dots on the map - are actually booming retirement and snowbird places - must be all the lakes in the area.

Anyway - we were happy to to have arrived and made our way to site #50 - right beside a what? yes, the playground! We had decided to spend - literally - a few nights at a state park on our way to the conference to charge all of our electronics, have showers and do our laundry. Although reasonable for Florida it was a definite splurge for us at $23.98/night. But boy did we enjoy having the heater on for a near freezing two nights.

There are many trails to take - on this one we felt like a dinosaur would step out any moment.

This was to be our fourth visit to a Big Oak and I guess it still is but sadly it hasn't survived. The trail guide listed it as 1000 yrs old and 36 feet around.

Friday morning it was time to leave the park for Plant City! With not far to go we took our time getting reading in the morning and getting in some good playground time. Our route was little more convoluted since we had to keep moving west. After several towns and more orange groves we were on route 60 closing in on Plant City.

Now, for those of you that don't know - as we didn't but surely do now - Plant City is known for it's strawberries. On this morning though with all the Orange groves that we had been driving by Derek and I were anxiously trying to find a fruit stand to stop at to buy some fruit. Apparently there aren't many.

Just as I was directing Derek to take a right onto the 39 - his foot hit the brake - I mean REALLY hit the brake as he had just seen this....

and this....

And so, we made a not to gracious entrance into the Strawberry Palace. We were so glad he was on the ball and we truly enjoyed our stop at this very fine produce stand. We are getting pretty good at fair prices and quality and so were so happy to see a combination of both. Cassia was quick to help herself to the strawberry samples while Derek and I learned about all of the choices of oranges.

If you ever find yourself any where near or at the corner of route 60 and 39 just south of Plant City - we highly recommend that you stop here - particularly if it is lunch time. We just got produce this day but we may have to return before we leave the area for a cuban and some strawberry pie.

And that's the kind of day it was - or couple of days I guess. It was nice to travel through agriculture areas we really enjoy the openness of the landscape. We were happy to be showered and with clean clothes and warm the night through.

Everglades National Park

After our crazy few days getting to southern Florida we were thrilled to find a respite in the Everglades National Park. If you have some time - get comfortable - I have a lot of pictures for this post, after all we spent a week at the Long Pine Key Campground.

As mentioned in our last post we arrived at the campground in the dark, which isn't our usual way - actually I think this is the first time it has happened. I was humbled for sure since during the summer when a camper comes in late I wonder why they are not more organized. Well - I have to eat those words now - right!

It was very strange driving in so late and we weren't even sure how far we would get in since there is a $10 fee to enter the the National Park. The park is also 11 miles west of the city of Homestead with agriculture between the two. We were driving in the dark, going left, going right, going right - if it weren't for the signs we would have wondered if we were on the right road.

Anyway, we came to the Visitor's Center and pulled in. It didn't give us much info on the boards and so we continued. Further ahead we came upon the entrance gate and building - surprisingly one gate was open - we drove on in. Five miles or so down the road was a sign for the Campground so we turned left - after another mile or so we came to the very quiet - albeit busy - campground.

We FINALLY found a spot - sort of backed in well - and went to sleep!

Of course when you come into a place in the dark it is always fun the next morning to see what it looks like. The Long Pine Key Campground is very nice with a combination of trees and taller and smaller plants. As a result most of the 100 or so sites are quite private. There are no hook ups but restrooms for a fair price of $16/night.

For the next seven days we enjoyed site #99. We were considering moving down to the Flamingo Campground a few days later but upon hearing from someone in the know - that it wasn't as nice, had no trees and had wayyyyyy more mosquitoes - we decided to stay put.

Just off of our Key West experience we were now a little more willing to take someone else's advice.

We spent most of our time lounging around and going for walks around the campground - it has a great small lake/large pond to walk around. We went for at least 2 good walks a day which certainly helped us de-stress.

We even attended one of the Ranger Programs. Everyday we passed through the amphitheater and so we told Cassia in two days we would take her to a movie about Smokey Bear. We were stretching the truth just a bit since the program was entitled "Smokey Bear was he right?" But we figured he'd be in there somewhere.

So on New Year's Eve in the Everglades National Park sitting at the amphitheater we learned about the role fire plays in our natural areas. The Ranger is at the Everglades in the winter and Yellowstone in the summer and has been full timing for 8 years - ex military. It was very interesting - not a movie but a slide show - and thankfully one had Smokey Bear on it so enough to keep Cassia interested.

We left our site every few days to either see something else or to pick up supplies from Homestead. Boy were we ever glad when we returned from the mayhem.

Robert is Here is a fruit stand on the trip between the Park and Homestead. We stopped in to buy some fruit and to visit the little zoo in back. We purchased some interesting and exotic fruit - two of which we are still waiting to eat. We wish we had written down the names! We ate one that looks like a potato, has the texture and colour of a pear but tastes like brown sugar - very rich. A second fruit was the size of a small orange but with a hard skin - green. Inside you eat seeds surrounded by a goopy substance with the flavour of orange concentrate. So fun eating new fruits!

A second business just before the Everglades Park is the Gator Grill. How can we be in alligator territory and not try some. I have had it before but Derek was very curious.

We shared the Gator Basket which included shucked grilled alligator with a cream sauce, coleslaw and fries. It was a bit steep at $9.35 but now Derek knows that yes - alligator is pretty good but tastes much like chicken.

About as close as Cassia would come to the alligator.

The Everglades National Park of course also offers many places to immerse yourself in the landscape. Near to us was the Royal Palm with the Gumbo Limbo and the Anhinga Trails.

Gumbo Limbo is a tree - with a beautiful red brown trunk.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Gumbo Limbo trail - we were on it alone and it was a nice respite from the hot sun. The Anhinga Trail is THE trail to see the birds and alligators - up close! VERY close.

We are not bird people so to speak - I know lots of Snowbirds are birders - can't blame them at this time of year. On the other hand, I do appreciate the birds when I see them even though I don't know what they are.

Since it was early morning and just warming up many of the birds had their wings open like this guy.

As we were strolling along I was slightly ahead of Derek and Cassia. I was looking out at the water when a lady beside me pointed to the alligator surfacing just below us.

WoW!

A once in a lifetime moment - I am so glad I had my camera ready!

I've never thought of alligators as beautiful but this is quite poetic isn't it?

As I followed him along he crossed paths with a rather large turtle.

Hmmm - well Cassia did seem larger if it came to it. Probably don't try this at home.

We saw probably at least a few dozen alligators along the boardwalk trail either on the shore or on the water. This guy was lapping up all the attention he was getting.

This was our second encounter with alligators. You can see the really BIG ones we walked by at the Aransas Wildlife Refuge in Texas back during our 2008 Tour here.

Towards the end of the trail as we were heading back we came across a small group of people watching this bird. He had just caught his breakfast and was attempting to eat it with us and - more importantly a group of vultures watching him. It was a second once in a lifetime moment.

As we watched, the poor guy got the fish caught on his beak - perhaps we were all making him nervous. I think all of us AND the Turkey vultures were holding our breaths.

Success! It took a good 5 minutes or so but he got it in - I missed the picture because I was just so happy watching - but this is a picture of the fish going down.

Over the week we also met some really great people. Thanks to the Rangers at the gatehouse - Levi, Cindy and Dallas who we had numerous conversations with. By the way - we HIGHLY recommend the Long Pine Key Campground for it's cleanliness and friendly, hospitable and informative Rangers.

We also spent some time with Brian and Suzanna from Hollywood just between Miami and Fort Lauderdale - they were out for a few days of camping with their son Sable and daughter Mimi. Mimi is just a bit older then Cassia and so we visited so the kids could play or well for Cassia to eat all their food - yikes!

Just before we left we met Charlie from Alabama touring around on his Harley. Obviously Derek struck up a conversation with him as he was making coffee in the bathroom - someone as in love with his coffee as we are! We visited with Charlie a bit swapping camping locations around Florida - and trying to convince him to come see us in BC sometime.

And so that was our time in the Everglades National Park. Well worth the trip to Southern Florida! In the end we didn't make it down to Flamingo even for the day, and we didn't go on all the trails.

We are ok with that.

We no longer need to see 'the end' of something and were content to just see what we could see close by. Our last night there was down right cold - almost freezing. Thankfully our battery still had enough charge to run our furnace that night and so we stayed warmish.

On Wednesday morning we headed out - a bit sad to leave.

The Florida Keys.....

First, I MUST start this post with stating a few things....in our defense.

Admittedly, our timing of visiting the Keys was wayyyyyy off. To a certain extent this was out of our control since we want to attend a Bible Conference in Plant City the first week of January. From the time we left Valdosta Georgia we had 19 whole days to fill - may as well go to Southern Florida.

Next, we had received a lot of 'free' advice about the best time to go. Our plan was to go today - after the holidays. However, last week we were told it would be better to get there and out again BEFORE the New Year's weekend because come beginning of January the place fills up with snowbirds.

So - we decided to go down the Keys last Wednesday - Dec. 27. The plan was to go down - take our time - stay at one of the THREE state parks, visit Key West on Thursday and either come back up that day or stay a second night at a state park.

Didn't happen - not even close.

By the time we got out of Midway and stopped in Homestead for groceries it was around noon. Excitedly we headed south on the #1 to THE KEYS.

Well whatever we thought about what the Keys actually are and look like was not quite right. It is a long trip with very little to see. I don't want to be too harsh - it isn't all bad.

But on this day at this time we were in a traffic most of the time - the trip down is filled with towns and congestion - lots of stores and pull outs. The problem was that once we got to the 'ocean' areas we were always to big to fit in the little fishing pullouts. Plus when you are moving so slow you hesitate to pull off.

Stopping in at the first state park was a sign of things to come - FULL!

No matter - we are becoming great stealth campers. Maybe they aren't all full - maybe we could get a hotel instead - let's continue!

Short story is that we didn't reach Key West until it was dark. We headed downtown only to find out it has VERY narrow streets and it was FULL of people. We got lost since I was intent on a photographing Mile 0 - we had come this far! We got the wrong directions and ended up in a very small dead end! Amazingly Derek got us out with the help of a very small delivery dock! The tightest corner we have ever been in!

After a few stops and some tense moments we drove around and stopped for dinner along the A1A. Sad to then have to get back in the truck at 7:30 at night with no destination.

We did stop at a few hotels only to find out they were full.

We finally had to admit that we could not find a place here, could not steath camp and had to leave the Keys.

Along the way - at about nine o'clock we stopped in Marathon. Derek checked at the hotel finding out that it was also full - no matter he heard the clerk say that it would be $169 if they did have a room and it was $385 at the hotels in Key West.

We ran across the street and had a cuban coffee and piece of key lime pie. At least we can say we had key lime pie at the Keys.

I had to take a picture of the beautiful blue water out of Derek's window since mine always had the hydro poles.

Thank goodness I took a photo of the sunset from the truck.

We ended up driving all the way out of the Keys that night - we got to the Everglades Campground at around 1:30 in the morning - we were tired and disappointed but glade to be parked in a quiet campground. Cassia was long asleep but transferred easily to her bed.

So - that was our Keys experience. We know that no one could have talked us out of going.

We WERE warned!

It was just that we needed to see it ourselves and thought that we could find somewhere to park overnight.

Knowing what we know now we wouldn't go but we understand that everyone needs to do there own thing. Our suggestions are: don't go in December/January, make sure you have RV reservations and know why you are going...there are nicer beaches and towns in other parts of Florida.

Talking with locals it seems that the Keys are always busy - hard to believe that people choose to live there.

After a quick visit to the playground at Gilchrist Park in Punta Gorda we headed south full of optimism for our travel day to the Fort Myers area and on to Everglade City.

All started out well along the 41. Just north of Ft. Myers we suddenly saw this HUGE Shell Factory sign. Instantly I recognized it!

Could this be THE shell factory we visited when I was a toddler? Location is right - I have yet to confirm with my sister...hopefully she can recall.

Anyway - since it was early we turned in. The trouble was that there was also a flea market going on and suddenly the road narrowed and parking looked tight. We continued on and found a space in the Shell Factory parking lot. Because the factory didn't open until 10 and it was 9 we went to look around the market - reminding us of Quartzsite.

That was fun - we bought some more Plant City strawberries, some Italian bread and some kettle corn from a nice couple from NE USA now living in Punta Gorda.

Once done we went to the HUGE shell factory full of yes - shells - but everything else you could think of as well.

I doubt the Subway sign was there in the 70's.

The Shell Factory had many many things for Cassia to ride.

It also had a pirate room with a talking pirate even - NOT Cassia's favourite place - actually she cried - can't say I blame her.

On a safari - this room was FULL of stuffed African animals.

After a very challenging time getting back out of the now full parking lot we were back on route 41 south. Destination - Ft. Myers Beach - where we camped when I was a kid. I was full of excitement - I am FINALLY returning to a place of fun times.

Wrong!

Now first I must explain that there are two routes south - route 41 through Ft. Myers to Naples OR Interstate 75. As I have mentioned the interstate is usually our last choice. I did ask Derek which route he wanted to take.

Now famous last words "we'll do the 41 - we'll see more that way".

Well we saw more all right - more and more and more restaurants and stores and malls!

By the time we got to the Ft. Myers Beach turnoff we were already completely done with the traffic.

And so - I had to let go of seeing Ft Myers Beach. It's ok - I will leave a memory a memory.

After a lot of stop and start we FINALLY got south of Naples and turned east with the 41. Thankfully the 41 east is surrounded by well - nothing - not nothing exactly - lots of grass and trees. It should be the scenic route east with the Alligator Alley toll round just north being the quicker route. But obviously some people take the 41 so they don't have to pay the toll but still want to drive fast.

We reached the Everglades City turnoff and took it - I choose this destination thinking it MAY be a quaint fishing villages.

NOPE!

I will probably never live that choice down. It was a dirty little place with nothing to look at. Thank goodness it was only 4 miles in. We stopped for lunch beside the park so Cassia could play on the playground but that didn't last long since it was so dirty. We couldn't get out of Everglade City fast enough but had to first stomach $20 of gas at $3.65 since we had timed our gas filling wrong. Sad since it was $3.07 when we left Punta Gorda.

This day was getting to be a bit much and it was only one o'clock.

We had done our research before leaving Punta Gorda and had decided to spend the night at the Midway Campground in the Big Cypress National Preserve. Just before that we stopped at the very busy Visitor's Center. Cassia and I went in to look around. I mentioned to the info people that we were headed to Midway.

"I don't think it is full - they usually let us know - but it is a busy week".

Uh oh - we did NOT need this.

Cassia and I pretty much jogged back to the truck - let's go - let's go!

Totally false alarm - we got the campground and it was less then half full! And what a great park it is - and it has electricity if you can imagine! What luxury - a dump, water, restrooms, nicely paved sites and grass and electricity for $19. And the camp hosts were very nice - we highly recommend this as an overnight stop.

By dinner time it was pretty full.

While Derek was working at the dump Cassia and I strolled over to get a closer look at the alligator in the pond. There was a family having a picnic and so we approached the group to look at the gator.

Well! what a great group! We ended up spending the next few hours visiting with them. We met Yanisia from Miami who was with German from Argentina and his family. We were able to ask them all sorts of questions about Miami and their lives there. When we first met them Yanisia and German were flying a kite and were nice enough to let Cassia hold the string. Later they actually gave Cassia the kite! What a nice and generous gift!

So a white knuckle day that suddenly got better at about two o'clock in the afternoon. We had a nice evening watching the 1972 version of Charlotte's Web with our electricity.

Tomorrow was finally our trip the Florida Keys!

Beach hopping - Siesta Key to Punta Gorda

Three days since a post! Three days!

Well - we have been at the beach - a little bit of village stuff but mostly just hanging around in the sand and water. This is a tough post - lots of pictures to sift through and lots to talk about.

I will just stick to the basics I guess.

We spent Saturday - Christmas Eve day along Siesta Key - just south of Sarasota down to Venice. We passed by the Siesta Key Beach parking lot because it was a bit small and opted instead for Turtle Beach. We were there early and so had a good spot to park.

Before that, we spent the first part of the morning in Siesta Key Village in desperate need of some beach gear. We found it at one of those big beach shops with tons of stuff - you know the kind!

We did well though with our mats and umbrella - we of course needed some more sun tan lotion - Derek HAD to have a new cap - but why get one when you can get 2 for $10! Postcards were a must as was Cassia's Florida snow globe! WoW!

After a quick stop for coffee at Lelu and we were on our way.

Later in the afternoon we headed south again deciding to check out Caspersen beach where we were thinking of spending Christmas Day. We got there just before sunset and so took a stroll knowing that Walmart wasn't far.

We decided to stay for the sunset. It was well worth it! Right?

We spent Sunday - Christmas Day at Caspersen Beach just a short drive from our overnight stay at the Walmart in Venice. We were there bright and early to claim our spot in the relatively small parking lot. Nice because we could do the beach but come back for meals and sleep time - we stayed until after sunset.

Caspersen is known for shark teeth. I was talking to a couple from Georgia who were quite successful at finding them but it looked like it was a full time job for them. Later in the day a lady gave one to Cassia - so we have our very own Caspersen shark tooth - which are black by the way - as is much of the sand when you look real close.

Monday morning we bid our Venice Walmart good bye on our way south. We were able to steath camp here for two nights - it was nice and quiet closed for Christmas. To our surprise this morning as we were leaving we saw the 'NO OVERNIGHT RV PARKING' - we couldn't believe it! We hadn't seen the sign the previous two nights - phewwww. So probably don't add this Walmart to your list of places to overnight - we were obviously really lucky!

We headed south on the 776 deciding on the way to go right to Boca Grande since it was still early. Boca Grande is also listed in my little touring book.

"Located on Gasparilla Island, Boca Grande is known for its charming authentic downtown, sugar white beaches, blue water and world class fishing. There are no gas stations in the village, so many local residents use golf carts as their main mode of transportation."

Well - Boca Grande was OK but to us they are a bit generous with their praise. First, it cost us $14 just to get on the island. Once on you drive the entire island - about 3 miles to get to the downtown. Authentic wouldn't be my choice of words - we drove around - but it didn't entice us enough to actually park and get out of the truck. We carried on towards the beach. By the end of the island we realized that we had no choice but to pay to park at a public beach - yes it is only $3 but the day was starting to add up.

The water is blue but we have seen far whiter beaches.

To us Boca Grande wasn't worth the price - be forewarned!

By three or so we were done and headed to Punta Gorda our next destination. We had read about the Fisherman's Village and were hoping to purchase some seafood. Upon arriving we realized that it isn't the quaint little quay we have been looking for - instead a high priced marina. Instead we drove over to the Laishley Park Municipal Marina. After a stroll we decided to treat ourselves to a crab dinner at the Laishley Crab House - seemingly the most popular place around.

for the crabber girl who shucked them all for us. Darn we missed her name. Thank goodness for her or we would have been there all night.

After dinner a second walk around the park.

So - that's it for me! Tonight we are attempting to stealth camp at the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce. We were going to head to the truck stop on the interstate but thought we would try this parking lot first. At least we will have a place to go if we get bounced from here.

Tomorrow we take on Ft. Myers, Ft. Myers Beach and Naples. We are planning on staying at the Collier Seminole State Park tomorrow night and then it is on to the Everglades!

Beach Bums

Well - we have found something all three of us are really good at - being beach bums!

We spent today at the beach!

Our morning started early since we knew we wanted to get a lot done today AND we were headed to the beach - finally! We were on the road by 8:30 which is really early for us!

Unfortunately we had to go onto the Interstate and it was crazy! But we survived and were happy to see exit 250 - our off ramp which would take us to the 41.

The 41 was a nice easy ride to Bradenton where we turned right on the 64 taking us to Anna Maria Island.

When we got there we weren't sure where to go. We passed a beach but kept going and stopped at the Visitor Info - which was CLOSED. I checked the large map on display and we decided to go back to the beach. So - we really didn't see the Island.

We spent about 1 1/2 hours at the Manatee Public Beach and really enjoyed ourselves - you should have seen Cassia!

We weren't there a 1/2 hour and were treated with a dolphin sighting! WOW!

Cassia has found her place - she didn't need any encouragement from us to play, swim and run.

Since it was lunch time and we knew that there were more beaches we packed up and moved on down the 789. We didn't get far since we found a new beach which looked much less crowded and had a sign for RV parking.

Now this was the spot - Coquina Beach. A pullout with picnic tables, grass and lots of shade for the animals. PLUS - we could walk to the beach which was even nicer with less people! We realized that the other beach was THE BEACH.

So - it was a day of doing it all - we walked the beach, we played in the sand, and we played in the water. It was a hot day and all of our skins are feeling it tonight!

I do feel for all of our friends over in the west where it is a bit cooler right now! We know all about that after a cold and windy winter in Arizona and California last year. That is one of the reasons why we came this way this year - chasing the sun.

Back to the beach tomorrow. We were going to head to a State Park for a few nights down the 41 but we love the area so much we are attempting to boondock in the Sarasota Home Depot tonight - wish us luck. We are so desperate we are willing to hear 'that knock'.

I do believe that sand is going to be a constant for the next little while - doesn't it just get everywhere!

Today's Interesting Link: We are here in Sarasota Florida! We drove around a bit looking first for the Sam's Club and now the Home Depot. Sam's Club had no overnight signs so we had to move on. It is a nice looking town - very clean. It even seems to have an Amish District as we passed and Amish market and restaurant and saw several on the sidewalks bicycling. We may go back to try the restaurant - IF we can find it back.

Backroad Florida

In keeping with our plan to stay OFF Interstate 75 - hopefully for the entire time we are in Florida - I poured over our maps last night to navigate our path south.

It took us a good hour or so down the road to get over leaving Micanopy - this little town has set a very high bar upon which all other places in Florida will be held against!

We were actually able to get all the way to where we are now - probably more then 100 miles or so down the road without going on the Interstate once. Instead we used the 441 to the 27/301 to the 301 which took us all the way to Zephyrhills. A quick trip on the 54 and we are BESIDE the Interstate at a Sam's Club for the night.

For such a long travel day we have very few pictures. Leaving this morning our destination was Dade City. It is another stop listed in my handy book describing a quaint downtown with shops and cafes.

Sadly, when we drove into downtown Dade City we were disappointed. If we hadn't been to all the lovely downtowns that we have posted it may have stood a chance to get us to stop - but not today.

We continued on our way.

The only stop today was at the Sparkman's Fruit Stand just north of Dade City. All day we had been passing fruit trucks and fruit stands but most were small, came up quickly, and without a large parking area. Sparkman's just seemed to lure us in and so we stopped to shop and have some lunch.

I had a major nostalgic moment at Sparkman's!

When I was Cassia's age we lived in Toronto and we came down to Florida in the winters. Now, since I was so young I only have a few memories.

When I walked into Sparkman's they flashed before me - I think it was the shell display that did it and all the orange and coconut stuff.

As the Owner said - Sparkman's is 'old Florida' - I knew what she meant - she is so right!

We happily sampled the oranges and took some with us - in addition to fresh squeezed orange juice, Plant City grown strawberries and two boxes of coconut patties - orange and key lime flavoured!

As were leaving the little coloured shells caught Cassia's eye. Derek went back with her to buy a handful and the Owner was nice enough to give them to Cassia for Christmas. So nice!

I had decided that tomorrow's destination would be Ybor City - Tampa's Cuban District - it sounds great. However, I can't really expect our driver to take on Tampa - it together with the Interstate would be stomach turning for sure.

Instead, we will bypass Tampa down to Bradenton and go in search of Anna Maria Island! It will be our first time to the beach!

Micanopy, Florida

Micanopy, Micanopy, Micanopy - how we love thee!

We are totally smitten with a little gem of a town called Micanopy here in northern Florida. So much so that we could almost just stay here and say forget about the rest of Florida - nothing could be better then here! Only 1 mile from the Interstate.

Our NEW most favourite place! I know, I know you have heard that before - a few times right? - but this time it is the complete truth.

Leaving Ocean Pond Campground we hit some backroads in order to get ourselves back on the interstate without returning to Lake City. A beautifully quiet drive through well mainly trees. It only took the 20 miles or so of the six lane interstate 75 for us to realize that that crazy road is NOT for us!

Thankfully I had read in one of the only really useful books I picked up at the Welcome Center about Micanopy.

The little book read "Micanopy - A Jewel of a Town. Experience the oldest inland Florida settlement and delight in Micanopy's tradition of charm and Southern hospitality. The town is brimming with friendly people, cafes and unique shops filled with antiques, collectibles, folk art and decorative fare."

It sounded like our kind of place.

And although all that is true - no words can describe this little gem of a place and do it justice.

Seriously.

We started with lunch at the Old Florida Cafe - how could we not have our first 'Cuban' sandwich especially since the price was right at $5.95 each and they were a really good size. We enjoyed them out on the patio and had a nice conversation with a couple, the fellow used to live in Micanopy.

Once lunch was over we headed out to take a stroll. Now, downtown Micanopy isn't big - just one street lined both sides with nicely restored buildings. And - it is mostly antiques. No matter - we were just soaking up the ambiance. You see the pace is slow here - like a place that time has forgotten. People are mulling about - there are seemingly few cars around - it is a cool, hip, and funky.

We eventually came upon The Shop. Now the outside of The Shop reveals nothing about the true magnificence that is held between it's walls. I do realize that I have gone on about other shops in previous posts - and I did mean all the things I said.

BUT - The Shop - is the most beautiful shop I have EVER been in! At the moment - the most beautiful Christmas shop I have ever been in. I could have taken fifty or more pictures of all the vignettes that have been created in this store that goes from one amazing room to the other!

It must truly be a labour of love for Owner Marlene and her employee!

We seem to find all the rocking chairs on this trip - Cassia won't go by one now with out a trial ride.

One of the places our handy little book mentioned about Micanopy was the Mosswood Farm Store. As we strolled along the main street we easily found it up ahead. It was about the same time that we noticed the playground! Yikes!

The three of us headed into the Store but soon Derek was on his own as Cassia and I headed over to the playground. There were a few older kids around but Cassia was on a mission and headed straight up to give the slide a run. This is the kind of slide that almost shoots the kids down and out. I have been working on teaching Cassia to slow herself down but she was having way to much fun landing full out on the nice white sand.

Cassia only went on this super fast slide a few times - the rest of the time she was trying to become one with the sand - I think she likes it! Boy - she doesn't know what is ahead with all the beaches.

The Micanopy Museum - we didn't venture in but it sure is a great old building to look at.

As we headed back to the truck we knew that our time here was short since we had to get to Ocala to spend the night at Walmart (we were going to give a Florida Walmart a try).

Maybe we could park here for the night Derek says.....

We asked the lady in the store that we were parked in front of. She directed us over to the store across the street. I wandered in to talk with Cheryl of the Micanopy Canopy Connection to see what she thought. Cheryl figured it would be fine since it is such a sleepy little place - which is what we were thinking. Well that was enough incentive for us and so we stayed.

Billy and Duncan - two new friends. Billy lives in Florida, Duncan in Boston. Duncan was nice enough to take some pictures of us with his impressive camera and is going to email them to us.

While I was working on dinner, Cassia and Derek wondered over to the musicians they saw in the gazebo. There they found Billy and Duncan with Billy playing his recently purchased ukulele. It only took mentioning to Derek that is was a good instrument to learn strings on that Derek was pining for his own ukulele.

After a peaceful sleep in downtown Micanopy we headed first thing to Leonardo's the ukulele seller. And thus Derek (and Cassia's) musical career begins!

We were sad to leave this town and our new friends - we have promised them and ourselves to return. We are so serious we are going to consider renting a place there next winter so that we can become Micanopians!

We have yet to see a beach but are really enjoying the central section filled with trees, rolling hills, agriculture and cattle/horse ranches.

Osceola National Forest

Monday morning we arrived in Florida!

It didn't take long as the state line was only 16 miles or so south of Valdosta. Prior to leaving Valdosta we once again stopped to stock up at Walmart, have lunch and check the internet since we were parked beside the Sam's Club.

Once in Florida we stopped in at the large - and very busy - Florida Welcome Center. The reading material I walked out of there with was quite ridiculous - but - we are here for at least a month and want to see all we can see. Since Cassia was napping and Derek was standing watch with Roofous, I was able to take my time and enjoy my little cup of Florida orange juice.

Although the wifi connection there was slow I was determined to get the Valdosta blog post up. I did but it took a lot of time and patience. Good thing we had a nice place to park and Cassia was happy playing with her toys.

Once that was done we headed to our destination - the Ocean Pond Campground in the Osceola National Forest. The campground is 13 miles east, 4 miles north and 1 mile west of Lake City. The linked page said that the sign was hard to see on route 90 but we found it no problem.

The campground has water/elec sites for $18, water for $12 and primitive for $8. Being the thrifty people we are we took the primitive. I notice now that we didn't take any pics of the hook up sites which were paved and nicely landscaped. The primitive sites were well - primitive - but that suited us just fine. We liked being tucked in the back by ourselves.

We were thrilled to be back in the forest especially since Ocean Pond is away from the road and very quiet. We were also happy to be back to a campfire at night and outdoor cooking.

Just behind our site was a trail. So first thing Friday morning we were on it.

Roofous was so happy for the chance to run......

and so was Cassia! Mom in the back can barely keep up!

Roofous was so hot from running we came around the corner to find him cooling off in the puddle - he was pretty muddy when he got out!

Ocean Pond Campround sits beside well - a pond I guess - but I would call it a lake. It is very nice and I imagine that many that camp here do so for the fishing. For Cassia and I it meant spending some time on the beach. The sand was ok to play in - filled with grass and branches - but Cassia's first chance to get her shovels and sand castle equipment out. It doesn't look so good in the picture but we had fun.

On the way we were also telling Cassia there was a playground. We are going to have to stop doing that until we actually SEE the playground. In this case it was a bit of a stretch to call it that but it had a slide and so it was enough for lots of fun.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Ocean Pond for the few days we were there and would definitely recommend it.

We decided to head out today because our propane was low and didn't want to chance running out. We are finding it difficult to find propane while traveling - we wonder why so few gas stations sell it.

I'll have to wrap up this post since my battery is almost done.

Valdosta, Georgia

Well, what can I say! Valdosta! The last few days have been great! While we were in Montgomery I learned of the Grace Fellowship Bible Church through a facebook friend. I thought I was seeing things because I knew that we were planning on driving through Valdosta - and what do you know there is a Rightly Dividing Church there!

A few facebook messages later and Pastor Lou was welcoming us to stop by and park at the Church!

So glad we did!

The Church had a nice - and large - lawn area in back.

Our neighbor - a praying mantis - he was on Derek's coat and hand but those pics were blurry.

We weren't there long when Pastor Lou arrived to greet us. He was soon followed by Maude. Maude - one of our new bestest friends! Maude treated us to a meal at Bojangles (Chicken & Biscuits) - yum!

Cassia sure has enjoyed all the church playrooms. At the GFBC she was even able to sit in on Sunday school with other children - a first!

More new friends to add to our list on our 'Grace Trail of Fellowship' so named by our Sister Pamela. We just can't get over how truly blessed we have been by the Church's we have been visiting!
